Milwaukee County Jail Roster

The Milwaukee County Jail Roster is a public resource that allows anyone to check if a specific person is in custody at the county correctional facility in the state of Wisconsin. The MilwaukeeCourt.us website provides public information about individuals who are currently or were recently detained. The official online search tool is supported by the Milwaukee County Sheriff's Office through the In Custody Locator portal. In addition to online search, information can be obtained by phone, in person at the facility's reception, or through a records request. The roster is regularly updated and serves as a transparency tool, allowing the public to track who is held in the local jail.

Search Current Inmates in Milwaukee Jail

There are several ways to find out if a person is in custody at the Milwaukee County Jail.

Online Search

  1. Go to the In Custody Locator page on the Milwaukee County Sheriff's Office website.
  2. Enter the person's last name in the appropriate field. Optionally, add the first name to narrow down the results.
  3. Click the search button. The system will display a list of individuals currently in custody that match your query.
  4. Click on the name to see details: date of birth, date of arrest, charges filed, and booking number.

For court case searches and warrant information, you can also use the Milwaukee Municipal Court case search system or the Wisconsin state court system portal. Links to these public resources are collected on MilwaukeeCourt.us.

Find Milwaukee Jail Booking Records Online

A booking record is created at the moment a detained person undergoes processing at the correctional facility. It is the first official document that records the fact of being taken into custody.

During booking, the following information is generated:

  • Unique booking number
  • Date and time of processing
  • Charges filed at the time of arrest
  • Agency that made the arrest
  • Basic demographic data of the detainee

Most of this information is available through the In Custody Locator — but only while the person is in custody. After release, the record disappears from the public roster.

To obtain archived booking records, you need to submit an official records request to the Milwaukee County Sheriff's Office. Typically, you need to provide the person's full name and approximate date of arrest. State-level criminal history checks can be conducted through the WORCS system of the Wisconsin Department of Justice.

It is important to remember: The Sheriff's Office explicitly states that it does not guarantee the absolute accuracy of the information on the site. Therefore, for legal purposes, it is recommended to obtain certified copies of records directly from the facility.

Search the Milwaukee Jail Roster by Last Name or Booking Number

The inmate roster supports two main search methods.

Search by Last Name

The most common method. Enter the last name in the "Last Name" field on the In Custody Locator page. If the last name is common — Smith, Johnson, Garcia — be sure to add the first name, otherwise, the system will return dozens of results.

Practical tips:

  • Check spelling — even one extra letter can mean zero results
  • Try spelling variations if the name has multiple transliterations
  • If the system supports partial matches, enter the first few letters of the last name

Search by Booking Number

If you know the booking number, this is the fastest way. The number uniquely identifies a specific record and eliminates confusion with namesakes.

What to Do If the Search Yields No Results

A zero result does not necessarily mean the person was not detained. Possible reasons:

  • The person has already been released — the record has been removed from the active roster
  • Booking is not yet complete, and data has not yet entered the system
  • The person is held in another facility — for example, in the Milwaukee Secure Detention Facility, which is under the Wisconsin Department of Corrections
  • There is an error in the spelling of the name

In such a case, call the jail at (414) 226-7070 and verify the information directly.

Jail Roster Updates and Search Limitations in Milwaukee

The In Custody Locator roster is updated throughout the day, but it does not happen instantly. There can be several hours between the actual time of detention and the appearance of the record in the system — until the booking procedure, data entry, and information verification are completed.

Main limitations to consider:

  • Display delay. A recently detained person may not appear in search results within the first few hours after arrest.
  • Quick disappearance of records. After release on bail, by court decision, or after serving a sentence, the record is removed from the public roster. Sometimes this happens within minutes.
  • Not an archive. The roster only displays individuals currently in custody. It does not contain historical data on all past detentions in the county.
  • Possible errors. The Milwaukee County Sheriff's Office officially warns that data accuracy is not guaranteed (see Wisconsin Statute 111.335 regarding the use of arrest and conviction information).

To obtain a complete criminal history of a person, use the WORCS system of the Wisconsin Department of Justice — this is a paid service that provides an official state-level record check. County-level court records are available through Wisconsin Circuit Court Access.

If you did not find the necessary information online, the most reliable option is to call the facility directly or submit a written records request to the Milwaukee County Sheriff's Office.
