Milwaukee County Court Dockets

Milwaukee County court records in Wisconsin are available through several channels. MilwaukeeCourt.us allows you to search for publicly accessible information about court cases in the county. Additionally, records can be found through the official online portals of the state's court system, directly at the Clerk of Court's office, and on public terminals in the courthouse. Below is a practical guide to the county's court system, hearing schedules, obtaining documents, and fees.

Milwaukee Court System & Jurisdictions

Wisconsin does not have separate District Court or Magistrate Court at the county level. The main court of general jurisdiction is the Circuit Court, which handles the vast majority of cases in Milwaukee County.

Milwaukee County Circuit Court

This is the court of first instance that handles criminal, civil, family, and probate cases. Specifically:

  • Criminal cases — felonies and misdemeanors, including DUI.
  • Civil cases — claims of any amount, as well as small claims cases up to $10,000.
  • Family law — divorce, child custody, alimony, protective orders.
  • Probate cases — estate administration, adult guardianship, mental health cases.
  • Juvenile cases — Children's Court, which operates as a division of the Circuit Court.
  • Traffic violations, if classified as criminal or related to a misdemeanor.

You can search Circuit Court cases through the Wisconsin Circuit Court Access (WCCA) system — a free online tool that covers all county courts in the state.

Milwaukee Municipal Court

The city municipal court operates separately from the Circuit Court and exclusively handles violations of city ordinances: parking, noise, minor traffic fines, building code violations. Information about municipal court cases can be found on the Milwaukee Municipal Court case search page. If you received a notice about a warrant and are unsure of its type, call the court at (414) 286-3800 — the warrants page explains the procedure.

Milwaukee Court Calendar & Upcoming Hearings

The Circuit Court schedule is published on the WCCA portal. To check hearings for today, tomorrow, or the current week, follow these steps:

  1. Go to the Wisconsin Court System case search page.
  2. Select "Circuit Court" and specify Milwaukee County.
  3. Find the desired case by party name or case number.
  4. The case card displays scheduled hearing dates, the courtroom, and the judge's name.

WCCA also shows a Table of Pending Cases, where upcoming sessions are visible. For municipal court cases, the schedule is available through the Milwaukee Municipal Court search system — it lists appearance dates and fine amounts.

Note: Hearing dates may change. If you need confirmation, it's best to call the relevant court office directly.

How to Get a Copy of a Milwaukee Court Document

You can obtain a copy of a court document in three ways — online, in person, or by mail. The type of copy determines the procedure.

Uncertified copy

Many Circuit Court documents can be viewed and printed directly from WCCA for free — but this is not an official copy. For municipal cases, viewing is also available online.

Certified copy

If the document is needed for another court, employer, or government agency, a certified copy with the clerk's seal is required. Steps to follow:

  1. Contact the Clerk of Circuit Court at the Milwaukee County Courthouse.
  2. Provide the case number and document name.
  3. Pay the appropriate fee (see the table below).

A mail request is also possible. Send a written request with the case number, document name, type of copy (certified or uncertified), and a check or money order to:

Criminal history check

To obtain an official state-level criminal record check, use the Wisconsin Online Record Check System (WORCS), supported by the Wisconsin Department of Justice. This is a separate resource, not associated with the court clerk's office.

Milwaukee Court Records Fees & Payment

Fees for court documents in Wisconsin are regulated by state statute (Wis. Stat. § 814.61). Below are the main rates for the Circuit Court — always confirm the exact amount with the clerk's office, as some fees may vary depending on the type of case.

Uncertified document copy (per page)$1.25
Certification fee$5 per document
Copy of judgment or court order$5 (certified)

The clerk's office accepts payment by cash, check, and money order. For municipal court, fines and fees can be paid online through the payment system on the Milwaukee Municipal Court website. Credit and debit cards are generally accepted both at the courthouse and online.

Some records — juvenile cases, mental health materials, sealed cases — are not public. Access to them is possible only by a judge's decision or according to specific provisions of Wisconsin statute.
